Bitstamp and Interactive Brokers (IBKR), two cryptocurrency exchanges and online brokerage firms based in the U.K. respectively, have recently become the first companies added to the UK crypto register in six months.
Financial Conduct Authority’s register of crypto firms that comply with anti-money laundering and terror financing regulations now stands at 42 firms, following two recent additions.
While the FCA currently only has the power to enforce compliance with registration and complying with FCA rules for crypto companies, if passed as is, a bill currently making its way through Parliament will ensure crypto is treated as a regulated activity, giving both FCA and Payment Systems Regulator more power to regulate this industry and protect consumers.
Bitstamp was added to the list on Tuesday after it registered in France in February and Spain/Italy last year. Since then, 52 licenses and registrations have been obtained by Bitstamp according to its post on its website.

Interactive Brokers of Greenwich, Connecticut was added to the list on Monday. Beginning cryptocurrency trading for professional investors in Hong Kong this February, Interactive Brokers and Paxos Trust joined forces in 2021 so clients could trade crypto.
